in kid heaven 👶🏼✨

we traveled quite a bit in the USA & Canada with our daughter before her first birthday, but hadn’t done a big, international trip and wanted our first destination to be easy and welcoming for her. we kept hearing from folks that Portugal was super kid-friendly, so we decided it would make for a good trial run. and boy, did Portugal deliver!

we were ushered through lines without waiting. every hotel we stayed at seemed to roll out the red carpet for L, providing cribs (cots, in Portugal), diaper pails, baby bath tubs & goodie bags full of the sweetest gifts. restaurant staff rushed out with high chairs, kids menus & colored pencils as soon as we walked in. everywhere we went, people of all ages cooed & smiled & engaged L in little games. it was so delightful & heart-warming & made all of us feel so at ease.

in Lisbon, we kicked things off with a fabulous stay at the @martinhal Chiado. as a completely family-focused hotel, there were so many little details that made our stay so enjoyable!

if you love food, you’ll love Lisbon. as a vibrant and diverse city, Lisbon serves up delicious Portuguese food alongside many other cuisines. if you plan to visit Lisbon, come hungry!

@tabernasalgrossoalfama: this was, without a doubt, the best meal we had in the city. a modern take on the classic Portuguese tavern, it’s at once traditional yet fresh, low-key yet impressive, and the flavors and dishes are sure to wow. be sure to make a reservation to ensure you snag a spot in the cozy 25-seat space.

pastel de nata: eating your weight in pastel de nata is almost a requirement when visiting Lisbon. as the story goes, monks and nuns in the 18th century used egg whites to starch their habits, leaving them with an excess of egg yolks. the clever monks started making and selling a delicious, sweet custard with the surplus yolks and thus was born the pastel de nata. you’ll find excellent versions at @manteigaria.oficial and Santo António in Lisbon.

@eatingeurope food tour: one of the most memorable things we did in Lisbon was the “Undiscovered Lisbon” hosted by @eatingeurope. we booked a private tour (since we needed flexibility with our toddler) and spent 4 hours exploring the city with our lovely guide, sampling traditional food and drink, meeting small business owners, and learning how Portugal’s history as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries is still evident in their cuisine today. highlights included Mozambican cuisine at @cantinhodoaziz and wine & small bites at @pata_gastrobar.

@intenso_lx: an unplanned but delightful find! sit on the patio on the bustling Rua da Boavista and enjoy hearty, flavorful, Portuguese dishes like sirloin pica pau and tempura green beans.

Lisbon, Portugal, has roared onto the international scene in the past 10 years, attracting visitors from around the globe. one of the oldest cities in Europe, it is thought that Lisbon was first established by the Phoenicians as a critical trading port around 1200 BCE. since then, it has been reinvented and reborn countless times. today, visitors flock to the city to experience its deep history, charming architecture, vibrant food scene, and picturesque scenery.

as tourists have flooded the city, so too have many of the challenges that come with surging tourism - crowds, pressure on infrastructure, foreign property ownership, rising cost of living. of course, the city also welcomes and benefits from the many visitors. it’s complex, no doubt.

as visitors, we can all do our part to tread lightly on the (extremely charming, cobblestone) streets of Lisbon to ensure the city continues to thrive for generations to come & to make our visits the best they can be!

☂️ travel in the off-season: i know i sound like a broken record with this one, but hear me out! i thought visiting during February would mean we would have the city to ourselves, but wow, it was busy! our hotel was bustling, the streets were full, there were lines to enter the most popular sights & restaurants. after chatting with locals, it sounds like a true “off-season” doesn’t really exist anymore. so, do yourself and the locals a favor and avoid the chaos that is Europe in the summer. instead, plan your visit for the winter.

🏨 stay in a hotel: like so many cities around the world, Lisbon is grappling with the unintended, negative consequences of Airbnbs and other short-term rentals. housing stock has been snapped up by foreign investors and prices have skyrocketed while the local labor and wage market has stagnated. pressure on the government led to the end of the “Golden Visa” program and a vote may take place this spring to place limits on short-term rentals in the city. if possible, opt for a hotel when visiting Lisbon.

we hear the word “sustainable” thrown around constantly, but it can represent different things in different contexts, so let’s get into what it means when it comes to travel and tourism.

first, let’s define tourism: a big, messy, all-encompassing web of complex economic, social, political, and cultural elements that includes everything from cruises to homestays to bike tours and countless experiences in between.

tourism, like most things, can have positive and negative impacts. the positives include job creation, funding for wildlife conservation, historical preservation, cultural exchange, relaxation, learning, and more. yet, the negatives can cause serious harm to the environment, contribute to unmanageable over-crowding, drive out local landowners and businesses, and create systems of inequity between locals and visitors, among other things.

enter the idea of sustainable tourism. the @gstcouncil defines sustainable tourism as “an aspiration to acknowledge all impacts of tourism, both positive and negative” and “to minimize the negative impacts and maximize the positive ones.” in short, finding a suitable balance between the positive and negative environmental, economic, and socio-cultural elements of travel is what creates long-term sustainability.

so, what’s the takeaway? understanding first 💭 action second 💚 to practice sustainable tourism, we need to understand the impacts - both positive and negative - of various travel choices and then we can make choices that maximize the positive impacts for travelers, local communities, the environment, and the tourism industry.

when it’s almost August and the last photo in your grid was taken in the snow…🫣 this season of life is full to the brim with laughter and love and joy and it’s all going by in the blink of an eye. we’ve celebrated so many milestones with our girl - first flights, road trips, and lots of new places - and seeing the world through her eyes is better than i ever could have dreamed. traveling definitely has a different cadence than it used to, but we’re finding our way and maybe someday when i have free time again (ha!) i’ll get back to sharing all the things i love about exploring this beautiful world.

walking in a winter wonderland ❄️

for many of us, it’s finally starting to feel like spring, but if you’re craving one last little winter getaway, Lake Tahoe just might be the place! late-season snow means spring skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, and more, and allows travelers to enjoy some of winter’s best activities outside of the typical high season (think: lower prices, fewer crowds).

not a downhill skier? not a problem. whether you simply prefer to avoid the mountain madness or are traveling with a baby or a dog, there are plenty of other activities that will still give you a taste of winter. consider a “slow travel” approach and immerse yourself in some of the area’s less popular winter wonders.

carrying my girl with me for just over 40 weeks was one of life’s greatest gifts and hands down my favorite journey yet. it’s been said a million times, but women’s bodies truly are spectacular. carrying and birthing my girl connected me with my body in a way i’ve never experienced, reminding me of strength, my competence, my tenderness, my instinct to love and care for a being i hadn’t even met yet and cementing a deep gratitude for the body i’ve often felt alienated from. there was plenty of discomfort & anxiety along the way, but also so much joy & learning.

there’s nothing better than holding my girl in my arms, but i’m so grateful to have these sweet memories of her in my belly.

while we wait, i’ve been reflecting on all the wonderful adventures i’ve already shared with her and am feeling so grateful to have had the kind of pregnancy that allowed me to travel with my girl. can’t wait to show her pictures of where she’s been & help cultivate her own love of exploration!
